February 7, 2006 – SwapSimple Launches Peer-To-Peer DVD, Video Game, and Book Exchange back to top
Turn Nancy Drew into Braveheart? New internet service forms a national media melting pot, where cash is not king.
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, February 7, 2006 – Bringing an end to dust covered books, and 80th home screenings of Tron, SwapSimple Inc. today debuts SwapSimple.com – a web service giving users the power to instantly exchange their DVDs, video games, and books for more of the same, or something completely different.
"The power here is not simply to save money, but to change the way you look at some of your collections," said Elliot E. Hirsch, CEO of SwapSimple. "By giving individuals a simple means to quickly and securely exchange the items they have already invested in, all of a sudden your static, dusty bookcase, becomes a dynamic and ever changing entertainment resource."
Using SwapSimple, users list the items they have and instantly receive what are called "Trade Credits," which can be immediately used to order other items listed by SwapSimple users all across the country. Insured by SwapSimple's "Trade Safe Protection," and supported by fully integrated electronic shipping, all exchanges are monitored by the company. Users ship their items directly to each other using pre-paid United States Postal Service shipping labels which are printed at home on plain paper, and can be tracked through the company's website.
"It was very important to us to seamlessly integrate shipping into the service," said SwapSimple VP and Systems Architect, Eric R. Haszlakiewicz. "Not only does our electronic shipping solution enable users to send items out for free, but it also makes the entire shipping process hassle, and error free. Users simply print the shipping label at home, tape it to their package, and drop it in the mail."
But the benefits of this new exchange service go beyond mere entertainment. With student users at over 400 colleges and universities who frequent the site in order to exchange their expensive college textbooks, SwapSimple provides students with a means to perpetually get the textbooks they need, without having to spend money they just don't have.

December 15, 2004 - SwapSimple National Online Book Exchange Gives Students New Hope In the Battle For Affordable Textbooks back to top
CHICAGO, IL - December 15, 2004 - In response to skyrocketing college textbook prices and the desire of college students everywhere to have access to affordable textbooks, SwapSimple, Inc. today announced the release of SwapSimple.com - a nationwide online book exchange service enabling students to obtain the textbooks they need in exchange for the textbooks they have finished with, without the need of buying or selling.
"The inspiration for SwapSimple came from many years of being a self-funded college student," recalls Elliot Hirsch, SwapSimple president and co-founder. "Money was tight, and textbooks were always a dreaded and unavoidable expense. I would regularly spend $100 for a textbook, use it briefly, then sell it back to my campus bookstore and receive around $20, only to watch it be turned around and sold for $80 to another student. After going through this losing process year after year, a couple of my friends and I began brainstorming alternatives."
After graduating from college and hearing the same story from their similarly disaffected younger siblings, the founders of SwapSimple decided this issue warranted full-time attention. One year, and thousands of cups of coffee later, SwapSimple.com was born.
"In order to make this project a success, we set the bar very high for ourselves," says SwapSimple co-founder and Systems Architect, Eric Haszlakiewicz. "We wanted a simple solution that would enable students to obtain their needed textbooks quickly and for the least amount of money possible, without sacrificing convenience or reliability. It was a tall order, but with SwapSimple I truly believe we have achieved that goal, and we are extremely proud of that."
To begin using SwapSimple.com, students create a personal account for themselves by completing a simple and free online registration process. Once they are registered and logged on, students list their unneeded books, and by doing so receive "trade credits." The amount of trade credit received is based on the cover price and quality of their posted books. Students can redeem those credits for any of the books listed on SwapSimple.com by its other users across the country. Other key features of SwapSimple.com include:
- Cost : Students are able to obtain any book listed on SwapSimple.com for no more than the cost of shipping the book to their door (usually around $4), plus a $2 per book service fee to SwapSimple (thereby enabling a student to get a used textbook that originally sold for $100 or more, for a total price of about $6).
- Speed : As soon as a book is listed, trade credits immediately become available for use. Users can therefore list the books they have finished with and order the books they currently require, all in a single sitting.
- Integrated Shipping : SwapSimple.com provides a simple postage payment system, allowing the receiver of a book to pay for shipping, instead of the sender. When a user requests a particular book, he or she pays for the shipping cost up front. The owner of the requested book then prints out a prepaid, pre-addressed mailing label from their printer, and ships the item off at no personal expense. Both users are able to track the book’s shipping status through the SwapSimple.com website.
- ISBN Integration: All books on SwapSimple are listed by ISBN. An ISBN is a 10-digit number that uniquely identifies one title or edition of a title from one specific publisher . By selecting books by ISBN, the user is assured of receiving the correct edition of the correct book.
SwapSimple.com will be available to students across the country beginning December 20th, 2004 and may prove to be just the answer students have been looking for in their battle for affordable textbooks, enabling them to save their typically limited funds for the truly important expenditures (like food).
In addition to students, SwapSimple is open to the general public. Any book assigned an ISBN is allowed to be exchanged using SwapSimple.
